Shirley: Visions of Reality

EUNIC FILMDAGEN

2013 | DIRECTED BY: GUSTAV DEUTSCH | 93 MIN

The Austrian Embassy has chosen the film “Shirley” by Gustav Deutsch as its contribution to the EUNIC Film Days. Love does not only exist between two people but can be much more. The main character of this film, based on paintings by Edward Hopper, is Shirley, a woman for whom the love for society and other people is central and who therefore does not merely take note of the prevailing circumstances, but with her commitment wants to help determine the course of history and with it the changes in society. Shirley is a woman who does not identify with the prevailing role model of a wife and yet wants to have a partner in her life. Shirley is the story of an attractive, charismatic, committed, emancipated woman who, in Hopper’s paintings brought to life, allows us to look into the thoughts, feelings and attitudes of an era in American history.
