SPAIN

The Executioner

EUNIC FILMDAGEN

1963 | ORIGINAL TITLE: EL VERDUGO | DIRECTED BY: LUIS GARCÍA BERLANGA | 90 MIN

Amadeo is the executioner of the Audencia de Madrid. There he meets José Luis, a funeral worker who is going to pick up the prisoner that Amadeo has just executed. José Luis cannot find a girlfriend since all the girls run away from him when they find out that he works in a funeral parlor. Amadeo’s daughter, Carmen, does not find a boyfriend either since all her suitors escape upon learning that her father is an executioner.

Instituto Cervantes (Utrecht) has chosen this film coinciding with the commemoration of the centenary of Luis García Berlanga, one of the most distinguished directors in the history of Spanish cinema. The film shows a time in the recent history of Spain in which the death penalty and the profession of executioner were a reality in the country. An ironic recreation of the contradictions of Franco’s Spain, filmed at the height of the regime’s time.
